EGER

    ARCHITECTURE

The Eger Castle (Egri vár) is a castle in Eger, Hungary. Historically, it is known for repelling the Turkish attack in 1552 during the Siege of Eger. Today it operates as a museum that collects, preserves and presents items of archaeological, historical, ethnographical, literary and artistic interest. Eger Castle has undergone significant changes in the past years. As a result of the tourist attraction development projects, new areas for exhibitions and events have been created, furthermore several modernising upgrades has been realised to bring the listed building complex up to a standard, which matches its value, as well as to create a touristic and cultural attraction.

The city of Eger has invited submissions for a new and attractive way to access the castle by elevating devices. The challenge was to come up with a solution that not only provides inclusivity for visitors with disabilities, but also does not ruin the historical environment and the cityscape.

URBA has submitted a proposal suggesting a tower running in the very stomach of the hill, doubling as a reservoir. The Cor-Ten or weathering steel tunnel forms a stable rust-like appearance after several years' exposure to weather, symbolising the lives lost while defending the castle. The reinforced concrete retaining wall joins the Casemates and includes a tourist point.

The submission received an honorary award.
